In the eyes of Nordic design, Earth Day is everyday! Since April 22nd is Earth Day, we wanted to take a moment to highlight some of the amazing things our brands are doing for people and the environment. It is hard not to think about the future of the environment when you are surrounded by the beautiful features of the Nordic landscape. From frozen tundra to lush forests, all ecosystems deserve to be preserved for future generations. These brands are making a special effort to ensure the longevity of wildlife, landscape, and the people who inhabit it!

Avid adventurer and illustrator Teemu Järvi wants to bring the beauty of Finland to your home. Teemu Järvi’s timeless illustrations are printed in Finland on the highest quality off-white paper ensuring that they will endure many room redecorations. Each illustration is designed to evoke a sense of calm as if you were walking in nature. All of the prints as well as the oak poster frames are certified by the Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) meaning that they were produced under strict guidelines with a concern for the environment as the number one priority. The FSC emphasizes on the conservation of the environment for future generations. Using materials with this certification as a brand means that you have chosen to exceed the strict standards of the council and act as an ambassador for the advancement of sustainable forestry.

Textiles on a mission

Since 1917 the family owned and run weaving business Lapuan Kankurit is a force to be reckoned with when it comes to sustainability. This is evident in their, 2020 Responsibility Manifest which outlines how the company is incorporating sustainable choices into every aspect of their production process. Weaving to exact measurements whenever possible allows for very little excess fabric to be produced, and whatever is left over is made into bread bags or sold at their warehouse!

Linen, which is one of the primary materials used by Lapuan Kankurit is an extremely durable and versatile material. The 100% European flax that is used to create LK’s linen requires no irrigation, and the whole plant can be utilized meaning very little waste is created. Flax growing in Europe absorbs about 250,000 tons of CO2 emissions annually!  Lapuan Kankurit has been awarded the prestigious, “Masters of Linen'' certification for their dedication to using sustainable and traceable linen.  The highest quality natural wool, cotton, and Tencel are also used to create Lapuan Kankurit textiles in their wind-powered weaving facility in Lapua, Finland. Tencel is a fiber made from eucalyptus pulp and is more sustainable than cotton as well as FSC certified!

This people-first business prides itself on creating multi-functional pieces that will bring joy to any home. This year for Fashion Revolution Week - which takes place internationally from April 19-25 2021, brands such as Lapuan Kankurit are focusing on interconnectivity of human rights and the rights of nature. Participants in Fashion Revolution Week are working to combat exploitation and ensure a safe working environment for employees by encouraging consumers to consider where their clothing and textiles come from. The team at Lapuan Kankurit is giving due credit to their skilled employees by encouraging customers to ask, #WhoMadeYourLinen and #WhoMadeYourWool.

We plant trees

“We plant trees” is printed on the back of each Lovi package you find at NØRDIK. Since 2009, Lovi has planted over 115,000 trees in areas battling erosion, drought, and flooding... that is no small feat!  Each product from Lovi is made of eco-friendly Finnish birch plywood certified by the Program for the Endorsement of the Forest Certification (PEFC) and is encased in a mailable plastic-free package! The PEFC is the world's largest forest certification system which strives to ensure that forests are managed responsibly and that everyone benefits from their use. It is a PEFC standard that a tree is replanted right after it is felled. As a result, trees are abundant and forest ecosystems are thriving. Since 2001, founder and creative director Anne Paso has strived to find a more sustainable alternative to plastic baubles and decorations. She has achieved this through choosing a readily available renewable material for all of her 3D designs. These small works of art make a perfect sustainable gift for loved ones at any age!
