We are delighted to announce the arrival of the special Lapuan Kankurit SAIMAANNORPPA ("Saimaa Ringed Seal") collection! Nature is precious for both Lapuan Kankurit and NØRDIK. By producing the SAIMAANNORPPA collection Lapuan Kankurit supports the fundraising efforts of the Finnish association for nature conservation (Suomen Luonnonsuojeluliitto) to protect the endangered Saimaa Ringed Seal. We are proud to be part of that effort by carrying the SAIMAANNORPPA collection.
The Ringed Seal (Pusa hispida saimensis) is one of the rarest and most endangered seals in the world. It is estimated that less than 400 of them remain in Lake Saimaa, Finland. At nearly 1,700 square miles, Lake Saimaa is the largest lake in Eastern Finland. It has been ranked as one of the five most beautiful lakes in the world. It is also the fourth largest natural freshwater lake in Europe. Lake Saimaa and its 13,000 breathtakingly beautiful islands are surrounded by natural forests and is the perfect nesting place for the gentle ringed seal.
The SAIMAANNORPPA collection is designed by Kaarina Tiainen. She is the resident expert on the ringed seal at the Suomen Luonnonsuojeluliitto. The pattern on the collection mimics the grey spotted fur of the ringed seal.
The collection products include Save the Saimaa Ringed Seal woven logo. Lapuan Kankurit donates part of the proceeds from every sale to Suomen Luonnonsuojeluliitto.
The conservation and advocacy efforts are working and have increased the seal population in recent years. Now you can also play a role in the endeavor to save the precious ringed seal by purchasing the SAIMAANNORPPA collection designs through NØRDIK.
