Aapiste is a Finland-based textile brand created by Riikka Kaartilanmaki. Riikka is the principal designer for Aapiste and incorporates environmentally responsible production techniques into her design process. All her products are handprinted using a traditional silk screen technique. She also uses non-toxic, water-based ink. Aapiste mainly uses linen in the creation of their pieces due to its durability, sheen and classic rough nature. Linen is one of the oldest and most durable and lasting textiles in the world. The look of linen products only gets better over time.
Riikka works mostly from her home in Eastern Finland when she is designing. Her home is surrounded by a forest, small islands and Lake Saimaa, the largest lake in Finland. She draws her inspiration from the nature surrounding her home and her experiences during travel or day trips to the forest. She likes to incorporate her everyday experiences with traditional Finnish textiles from her childhood and Finnish history.
Riikka offers such products as kitchen towels, tote bags, pouches, pillows and hand towels. Her designs include Norppa, uusi, Mustikkakukko, Airo, Kokka, Ursa, Metsakissa, Vaeltaja, Kuoret, Kehra and Tuuliviiri.
